Disinformation Bill

The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA), in connection with the government, have proposed the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2023

This Bill gives unacceptable powers to ACMA. Powers that will allow them to bully social media platforms through substantial financial penalties and a nightmarish bureaucratic process, to force the platforms to suppress and censor speech on ACMA’s behalf.

They have conveniently exempted the government, mainstream media, and mainstream educators from the effects of this bill!  But everyone else, independent journalists, community organisations, and the broader public’s data (posts and personal information) will be monitored, fact-checked against a standard arbitrarily decided by the platforms, and potentially censored if considered to be mis/disinformation. And there is no appeals process.

This bill’s primary purpose is to establish a ministry of truth that will ensure that no opposing voices to the political apparatus can utilise public spaces to speak, whilst propping up all structures and organisations that will act as the mouthpiece for the state.
Well, the people say NO!

We have composed a submission voicing our concerns to various sections and elements of this atrocious bill.
